Frequently Asked Questions

Beginner Questions

What is swing trading?
Swing trading means holding a position for several days to a few weeks to capture a larger price move, rather than closing it the same day (intraday) or holding for years (investing).
How does swing trading work?
A swing trader identifies a trend or setup on the daily or weekly chart, enters with a defined stop-loss and target, and manages the position over several sessions until the target, stop, or trade thesis changes.
How much capital is required?
There's no fixed minimum — what matters is that your capital is money you can afford to have tied up for days or weeks, sized so a normal string of losses doesn't threaten your finances.
How long is a swing trade held?
Typically a few days to a few weeks, though some trades extend to a couple of months if the trend and thesis remain intact.
Is swing trading suitable for beginners?
Yes — its slower pace gives beginners more time to think through decisions than intraday trading, making it a common starting point once the fundamentals in Level 1 are understood.
Is swing trading safer than intraday trading?
Not inherently safer — it trades faster execution risk for overnight and gap risk (see Module 26). Both styles require the same discipline around stop-losses and position sizing.
Can swing trading be done with a full-time job?
Yes — most swing trading analysis and planning can be done outside market hours (evenings/weekends per Module 30), with only order placement and periodic checks needed during the day.
How many trades should a swing trader take?
Quality over frequency — most swing traders hold a handful of positions at a time and only add a new one when a valid, planned setup appears.

Strategy Questions

Which timeframe is best?
Most swing traders analyze the weekly chart for context, the daily chart for the primary decision, and a 4-hour/hourly chart for entry timing — see Module 4, Timeframe Analysis.
Which indicator is best?
No single indicator is 'best' — indicators work best in confluence with market structure and price action, not as standalone signals (Module 10).
What is the best swing trading strategy?
The one that matches your risk tolerance, available time, and temperament, and that you can backtest and execute consistently — see Module 12 for the full range of setups.
How do I identify a breakout?
Look for price closing beyond a well-defined level of resistance or a consolidation range, ideally with expanding volume confirming the move — see Module 13.
How do I identify a pullback?
A pullback is a shallow, orderly retracement within an intact trend that holds above prior structure — as opposed to a deep, structure-breaking move, which is closer to a reversal (Module 14).
How do I select stocks?
Screen for liquidity, volatility, relative strength versus the index, and sector strength, then build a watchlist — see Module 17, Stock Selection.
Where should I place my stop-loss?
Based on market structure — beyond the most recent swing high/low or support/resistance zone that would invalidate the setup — not an arbitrary percentage (Module 23).
How should I determine my target?
Using a defined risk/reward ratio, the next meaningful resistance/support level, a Fibonacci extension, or ATR-based projection — see Module 24.

Risk Questions

How much should I risk per trade?
A small, fixed percentage of trading capital per trade — commonly 0.5–2% — so that no single trade or losing streak causes serious damage (Module 25).
How do I calculate position size?
Position size is derived from your fixed risk per trade divided by the distance between entry and stop-loss — never from a round number of shares (Module 25).
What happens when a stock gaps through my stop-loss?
Your order fills at the next available price, which can be worse than your stop level — this slippage is the core overnight/gap risk unique to swing trading (Module 26).
How should I manage overnight risk?
Size positions with gap risk in mind, avoid oversized positions into major events like earnings, and accept that a stop-loss price is a plan, not a guarantee (Module 26).
How many positions should I hold?
Enough to stay diversified across sectors without exceeding your maximum portfolio risk or losing track of active trade management — see Module 25 for portfolio-level risk limits.
